In May of 2012, HackensackUMC and LHP received approval for the Certificate of Need application with the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services for a transfer of ownership of Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, N.J., from Merit Health Systems, LLC. Mountainside Hospital is a 365-bed community hospital that delivers personalized care while also serving as a learning center via its nursing school and residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine and dentistry. The hospital has served Montclair, Glen Ridge and surrounding communities for more than 120 years.
President and CEO, HackensackUMC at Mountainside
Our first full year as a member of the Hackensack University Health Network was marked by many successes. In fact, despite a challenging operating environment for all hospitals, we realized our goal of providing world-class healthcare within our convenient, suburban setting.
Significant progress was made in our ongoing clinical integration with Hackensack University Medical Center, the network’s flagship hospital and clinical stand bearer, and we welcomed many HackensackUMC specialists onto our medical staff.
The extraordinary caliber of our patient care was reflected in various rankings, awards and certifications obtained in 2013. We secured an “A” grade for overall hospital safety in the national Leapfrog survey and Consumer Reports ranked us among the top four in the state in its inaugural “Surgical Safety Ratings.”
Our Stroke Center again received a Gold Award from the American Heart/Stroke Association. The Bariatric Center of Excellence maintained its standing among the “best in class” nationwide. Our Sleep Center received accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Following a stellar safety and efficacy review of emergency angioplasties performed in our Cardiac Catheterization Lab, our license was renewed – and, in 2014, we will continue to advocate for expanded licensure that also encompasses elective procedures.
The Cancer Center, accredited with Special Commendation by the Commission on Cancer, continues to add depth to its medical staff and deliver multidisciplinary, “whole patient” care. New treatment alternatives were added to its arsenal in the past year including Xofigo radiation therapy for prostate cancer, making HackensackUMC Mountainside the first hospital in New Jersey to offer the promising new treatment, and Y-90, a nuclear medicine program for the treatment of liver cancer.
As a result of these developments and others, HackensackUMC Mountainside is well-positioned to uphold its standing as a member of New Jersey’s premier hospital network and meet the operational challenges that lie ahead.
