Leadership Message

A Team That Goes Beyonds

Innovation, compassion and a relentless pursuit of healthcare excellence are what drive Hackensack University Medical Center every day. They are part of the reason more people choose to receive care here than at any other hospital in New Jersey. For more than 125 years, we’ve remained in motion – making progress in medicine, research and education.

This type of motivation produces a team that goes beyond: a team that pairs creativity and innovation to produce amazing results. The David & Alice Jurist Institute for Research is giving more options to more patients through its 610 active/open research studies involving more than 355 HackensackUMC research investigators. Our diverse research has been focused on a multitude of areas, including: oncology, pediatrics, surgery, cardiology and obstetrics/gynecology. We remain New Jersey’s top independent hospital recipient of National Institutes of Health Research funds, and our scientists and physicians were published in more than 90 peer-reviewed journals.

Our commitment to research and innovation was further demonstrated last year as we introduced the Office of Commercialization and Technology Ventures (OCTV) to provide leadership in the management of intellectual property and technology commercialization of HackensackUMC research innovation. Working together with investors, internal HackensackUMC departments, business leaders and academic institutions, a collaborative network has been established. Within a year, five invention disclosures from faculty have been received and evaluated and from these, four inventions have been found worthy of filing patent applications; an increase from one patent filed in 2012.

This type of research helps HackensackUMC remain as a national leader in healthcare innovation. We place such emphasis on research because we understand the breakthroughs that can occur through a collaborative, encouraging environment. With each new development, we can ultimately offer our patients – and patients everywhere – more advanced treatment.

On campus, we’ve embraced and used technology to improve the lives of our patients and team members. In this age of electronic records, a team of nurses was given smartphones for patient bedside use. The smartphone assists in bedside bar coding and registration, using various checkpoints for patient safety and verification – decreasing time and increasing efficiency in patient care.

Technology also affords our patients new opportunities for more than just medicinal purposes. Through the work of our Information Technology Department, new parents are given the chance to view their newborn baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). For those moments when parents cannot physically be with their newborn, we are offering them more ways to stay connected. These are things we could have only dreamed about when we first opened our doors more than 125 years ago, and we will continue to find new ways to enhance our patients’ experiences.

Pushing Medicine Further

All of this research and innovation is possible because of the incredible team of physicians, researchers, nurses, professional staff and volunteers – and the results speak for themselves.

HackensackUMC was listed as the number one hospital in New Jersey and one of the top three New York metro area hospitals by the U.S. News & World Report for 2013-14. We also received 10 national rankings and four high-performing New York metro area rankings. HackensackUMC was recently named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals™ for eight consecutive years, and received the 2014 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ for 12 years in a row from Healthgrades®. It is the only hospital in New Jersey, New York and New England to achieve either feat. Additionally, HackensackUMC is among Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals™ in five different areas – more than any other hospital in the state. We were the only hospital in New Jersey to be listed among The Leapfrog Group’s Top Hospitals for three consecutive years, and are the recipient of 23 Gold Seals of Approval™ from the Joint Commission – more than any hospital in the country.

Our team of exceptional physicians continued to go beyond. More than 160 affiliated physicians were listed in the 16th edition of the Castle Connolly Guide to Top Doctors: New York Metro Area; 20 affiliated physicians were listed in the 12th edition of the Castle Connolly Guide to America's Top Cancer Doctors – more than any hospital in the state; 132 affiliated physicians and 11 dentists were recognized as Bergen County’s Top Doctors and Top Dentists in (201) Magazine; 91 affiliated physicians appeared on the Best Doctors in America List for 2013; and more than 80 physicians and 14 dentists were listed as Top Doctors and Dentists by New Jersey Monthly magazine. We are honored that the best of the best choose to partner with us in care.

In early 2014, HackensackUMC became just one of two hospitals in the entire nation to receive our fifth consecutive Magnet® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, representing our 20th year as a Magnet hospital. In 2005, HackensackUMC became the first hospital in the country – outside of a pilot program – to receive this designation, which is the highest recognition that can be bestowed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center: a true demonstration of our commitment to patient care.

Here For Our Community

With a history spanning a century and a quarter, HackensackUMC has never wavered in our commitment to improving the health of our community. We are happy to provide events such as our free health fairs and screenings, as well as our annual Celebrating Life & Liberty cancer event. In its fifth year, we hosted nearly 5,000 patients, caregivers and team members at Liberty State Park with legendary performances by Gloria Gaynor, Village People and Quixotic. HackensackUMC is privileged to be a trusted member of the community, and we continuously seek ways to provide care to more patients in the best environment possible.

Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. EPA in 2012, together with The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center, we were able to decrease our medical waste from 1.35 million pounds in 2012 to 765,000 pounds in 2013. We became the first hospital in the country to form a recycling partnership with TerraCycle, and held on-campus recycling events. We also installed a new air conditioning chiller to significantly reduce both energy usage and costs as part of $2.6 million in energy efficiency on-campus improvements through the PSE&G Hospital Efficiency Program. All of these efforts were part of the reason we received the Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth.

We continuously update our campus to provide our patients with the world-class campus they deserve. Back in 2012, HackensackUMC broke ground on the multi-phase Emergency and Trauma Center (ETC) renovation and expansion project. The ETC expansion and renovation team ensured that, as promised, the first phase was completed in time for Super Bowl XLVIII. It began seeing its first patients in the renovated area in January 2014 and features: 29 private patient rooms; five state-of-the-art trauma bays; an increase in the ETC’s footprint by nearly 20,000 square feet; a front-door presence for the Pediatric Emergency Department; a larger decontamination shower; and a private EMS lounge to provide refreshments.

Upon completion, the ETC will feature specialty care areas for cardiac, cancer, trauma, geriatric and pediatric patients to reduce wait time for patients whose health are already compromised due to an existing illness/condition. Susan’s Suite, a 10-bed cancer treatment pod named in honor of patient Susan Zabransky Hughes, will be part of the specialty treatment areas. We believe it is the best equipped and most patient-friendly Emergency and Trauma Center in the entire region.

Everything we do at HackensackUMC could only be accomplished with adequate funding and resources. We are proud of our stable fiscal management and we remain strong in this shifting healthcare climate. In fact, in 2013 HackensackUMC had a total margin of $61.3 million, and a net operating margin of $35 million - one of our best years ever.

HackensackUMC Will Go Beyond

As one of the nation’s leading academic, research and medical centers, we will continue to set the standard for clinical care and patient outcomes and satisfaction. As with HackensackUHN, we will continue to focus on physician partnerships; exploring new avenues for expanded services and specialty programs. We will also, like our Network, pursue partnerships that will enhance our research and technology programs to offer patients cutting-edge treatment.

Every day, the HackensackUMC physicians, nurses and colleagues make this possible. They are on the frontline of care and go beyond in so many aspects of their job. We are grateful for their work, and look forward to another year of innovative, collaborative care.
