Founded in 1888 with just 12 beds, HackensackUMC was Bergen County’s first hospital. HackensackUMC is one of Bergen County’s largest employers with a work force of more than 7,600 employees. The nearly 1,600 physicians and dentists on the medical and dental staff represent the full spectrum of specialties and subspecialties and are internationalleaders in healthcare.

HackensackUMC is the Hometown Hospital of the New York Football Giants and the New York Red Bulls soccer team. It remains committed to its community through fundraising and community events, such as its annual Life & Liberty event, health fairs and Healthy Heart events.

Opened in June of 2013, HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley is a 128-bed, full-service, acute-care community hospital, providing the same nationally recognized quality care for which HackensackUMC is known. The hospital features: allprivate patient rooms, a state-of-the-art obstetrical unit, an intensive/critical care unit, five operating rooms, one special procedure room, and a cardiac catheterization laboratory.

In May of 2012, HackensackUMC and LHP received approval for the Certificate of Need application with the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services for a transfer of ownership of Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, N.J., from Merit Health Systems, LLC. Mountainside Hospital is a 365-bed community hospital that delivers personalized care while also serving as a learning center via its nursing school and residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine and dentistry. The hospital has served Montclair, Glen Ridge and surrounding communities for more than 120 years.

In September of 2013, Hackensack University Health Network entered into a groundbreaking alliance with six other health systems to form AllSpire Health Partners. Altogether, these seven health systems have a total of 25 hospitals, with a service area of more than six million people—making AllSpire the largest healthcare consortium in the country. The member systems are: Atlantic Health System (Morristown, NJ); Hackensack University Health Network (Hackensack, NJ); Lancaster General Health (Lancaster, PA); Lehigh Valley Health Network (Allentown, PA); Meridian Health (Neptune, NJ); Reading Health System (Reading, PA); and WellSpan Health (York, PA).

The new consortium will carry out joint activities in the areas of patient care services, research and education to improve patient and population health and create more affordable healthcare. This partnership is not a merger; it is an alliance with some of the nation’s best health systems to achieve very specific goals.

Hackensack University Health Network enjoys various models of employment partnerships with almost 300 physician practices throughout the region. Ranging from sub-specialists to pediatric specialists to primary care, and with an extensive network of cardiovascular specialists - these medical groups help to improve efficiency and streamline care, strengthening the core of its provider base. The Hackensack University Medical Group is the largest member of the Hackensack Alliance ACO, which was one of the first 27 ACO’s nationally, and has demonstrated over $16 million in savings in its first year participating in the Medicare Shared Savings program.

In March of 2012, Hackensack University Health Network and the North Shore-LIJ Health System announced an agreement to establish a strategic alliance. The new alliance explores opportunities for joint programs and initiatives, including but not limited to: establishing cooperative programs to promote quality and patient safety; improving care management programs in preparation for migration to new health reform-based care models; promoting and supporting co-operative programs associated with community health needs; developing joint clinical research projects and programs to advance education and medical science; establishing referral arrangements for specialty clinical care; developing joint information technology programs, such as application hosting or data storage; and jointly exploring the establishment or expansion of affiliated federally qualified health centers (FQHCs). North Shore-LIJ is the nation’s second-largest, non-profit, secular healthcare system, comprised of 15 hospitals, long-term care facilities and more than 200 ambulatory care centers throughout New York City and Long Island.


 

Hackensack Alliance ACO

Hackensack Physician-Hospital Alliance: In April 2012, HackensackAlliance ACO announced it was selected to participate in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (Shared Savings Program) Accountable Care Organization (ACO), a multifaceted program sponsored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). It was one of 27 ACOs that entered into agreements with Medicare to take responsibility for the quality of care furnished to individual beneficiaries in return for the opportunity to share in any savings with the Medicare program for improved care. As of December 2013, the HackensackAlliance ACO had more than 700 affiliated physicians covering nearly 13,000 lives with $10 million in savings.


 

Palisades Medical Center

In June of 2012, Hackensack University Health Network signed an affiliation agreement with Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, NJ, to collaborate and expand clinical programs and services, further improving the high-quality medical care Palisades provides patients in Hudson and southern Bergen counties. This partnership benefits patients by strengthening and supporting Palisades’ existing programs and brings additional state-of-the-art care and specialized diagnostic and medical treatments to the surrounding resident and business communities. The agreement fosters a closer working relationship between the medical staff and physicians at both hospitals, both complementing and supplementing the medical and surgical services already available at Palisades, a 202-bed hospital in Hudson County.
